Softball: Rock of Ages

Dear People,

Chris Fure's team barely beat mine, 21-19, in a see-sawing 10-inning masterwork that served to once again show that at its best, unaffiliated email-organized softball is the finest sport on the face of the earth. That it took place on the perilously verdant plastics of Maxwell's Astroturf sheathing only added to its majesty, and indeed, my bosom still quivers when I think that there were no fewer than seven home runs on that dreary Seattlesque day. In fact, there were two grand slams amongst those homers, though Pace's 3rd-inning smash over the right field fence was immediately thrown out as a cynical violation of Maxwell House rules, whereas Mike Davey's 6th-inning 4-RBI blast to deep center-left was righteous, legal and pure. Perhaps one fine day when he's a tad more mature, Pace himself will “understand” the ethical difference and try to bat accordingly.

In a dollop of bittersweet irony, five of the other six four-baggers were on my side, including Dave Ross' breath-taking 300-foot blast to deep center-left, which, to be sure, was a splendid complimentary bookmark to his equally inspiring triple. For the record, the Rossinator is 68 years young, and while I myself would love to be smashing homers and triples come 2028, the current arc of my own athletic progression-as seen by my somewhat less-than-helpful dropping of what would've been Alan Shabel's perfect 9th-inning game-ending throw to 1st-suggests that I might want to shoot for the more modest goal of basic sentience and a minimal amount of drooling. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Raymond

PS: Steve Seskin, our own slugger sans pareil, catcher extraordinaire and one of the greatest singer-songwriters to ever swing a bat, is returning to the Freight and Salvage this Sunday night! Details here:

Dear People,

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, and as of now it is full. As always, please let me know ASAP if you committed and need to cancel, and if you still want in, feel free to get on the wait list or contact me later for news of reopened slots.

This week's field fee is just $4, and that includes one of my own personally hand-crafted $10 trillion dollar rubber coins, for you to spend in any way your debt-laden heart desires. . .Raymond 845-7552
