Softball: Challenges

Dear People,

My team jumped out to a cringe-inducing 22-4 lead over Chris Fure's at the end of 5, and then, just for kicks, we resorted to one of the most Machiavellian tactics in the annals of all competitive sport; Yeah, we gave those suckers the rally-progressing illusion of late-inning hope before snuffing them out as if they were nothing more than mealyworms, 23-18. Regardless, I still feel a tad uncouth when I consider the nature of our initial early-inning onslaught, fueled as it was by Jimmy “Jim” McGuire's two grand slams and additional 2 RBI-homer (For the record, no other player hit even one).

Indeed, good 'ol McMighty blasted all three of those 4-baggers directly over that annoyingly shallow left-field fence that I discussed last week, which, as we all now agree, literally stands as a towering and irrefutable symbol of annoyingly shallow left-field fences (perhaps the semiotically correct would take exception, but they're obviously morons). So sure, our hero was personally responsible for 10 of our first 15 RBIs, and I have no doubt that he was tacitly proud of his remarkable feat. Yet given the placement of that pointlessly erected monstrosity, we can only assume that he feels a genuine sense of shame in his dubiously attained pride. To be sure, who wouldn't?

The point is that the state of our aerobic union is arguably kick-ass, and that's not bad given we're approaching the 18th anniversary of our creation as a recreational folk. Still, let's not kid ourselves; From the institutional scorn and ceaseless roadblocks of the Department of Parks and Wreck to the obvious fact that at least half of us are clinically disturbed, we've got issues. And therefore there will be a game at San Pablo #2 this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning . . . Raymond

PS: The Great Steve Seskin, singer-songwriter extraordinaire and moral backbone of this entire community (for the two times a year he actually shows up), returns to the Freight and Salvage this Friday night!. . .
