Softball: Our Ceaseless Struggle

Dear People,

Congratz to all on last week’s resplendent 11-inning 17-13 paragon of softball as it’s meant to be—fiercely competitive, frisky in underlying zeitgeist, and so brutally long that by the time it was over, I had finished my taxes. Even better, my team rallied to tie Darryl’s after trailing the entire game, then staved off a frightful 10th inning assault in which their winning run was left whistling Dixie at 3rd. In all candor, I don’t even know what that means, but the upshot is that we broke out in the top of the 11th and then held on one more time, proving once again that few things are as stirring as the raw resiliency of the human spirit.

I suppose what I’m trying to say is that there is nothing easy about being part of the unaffiliated email-organized softball-playing peoples. Over the last eight years of our fledgling existence, we have been harassed, disparaged, and continually driven from our rightful homelands, as if The Man were simply determined to toss us into the dustbin of aerobic history. The latest case in point: The City of Berkeley has once again informed me that our beloved Codornices will be occupied for many of the next several Sundays by some sicko entity called "The Albany-Berkeley Girl’s Softball League," which is, of course, nothing more than a cackling horde of pre-pubescent female CHILDREN with ruthlessly well-connected adult-hating mothers. And to think, 22 years later, friends still ask me if I’ve ever regretted my vaz.

The bottom line is that over the next couple months, we will probably be ricocheting around in both time and space, but I can assure you that I will not allow you to grow wan or jejune from a lack of cardiovascular release. The fact is that as you read these very words, my driveway and back patio are finally being poured with tons of freshly stamped Estonian concrete, and this alone will give me the strength to fight for our cause—Against the city, the stupid-ass children, and whoever else would deny us our sport. And therefore there will be a game at SAN PABLO FIELD #2, this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Raymond

Softball: Another Geographic Transition of Seamless Grace

Dear People,

There will be a game at SAN PABLO FIELD #2 this Sunday at 11AM, and as of now, it is already full. As always, please contact me ASAP if you committed and need to cancel, and if you want to play and didn’t get in on time, you are welcome to call me later for updates.

This week’s field fee is just $2, and that includes a chilled apéritif, seasonal greens and a delightful pan-seared eel thing with fresh mango and dill…Raymond 845-7552

PS: San Pablo #2 is at the corner of Mable and Oregon at San Pablo Park, about three blocks Northwest of the corner of Ashby and San Pablo. From San Pablo Avenue, turn West on to Oregon, drive three blocks and you’re there.
