Softball: The Imminence of a Staggering Communal Challenge ;-(…

Dear People,

Let me confess: I drove to our Codornices homeland on Sunday morning, just to make sure that she was indeed in a water-logged state of unplayability. The air was crisp, the sun was glorious and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Yet as I approached her, I had a gnawing sense of potential Hebraic guilt, and frankly, my innards felt queasy and turgid.

In any case, I arrived to find that she was already magnificent, and while there was a large home plate puddle that had the usual gaggle of baby sturgeon and herring, the hard reality is that we probably could've played after 30 or so minutes of intensive bucketing. In other words, my premature cancellation the day before cost many of you the only aerobic release you ever get, and thus if the people so demand, I will immediately tender my resignation and retire to my cherished childhood shtibl in the rich, moist soils of the West Kentucky bush.

For the record, though, this may not be the time to drive me from power, as joyous and liberating as that would certainly feel. True, the longer I stay, the longer I get to hold on to my ill-gotten Swiss bank accounts, and for that matter, the longer I avoid being dragged off to the Hague. Yet there's a really disconcerting bummer about to engulf the community, and if you let me stay, I'll do my best to shepherd us through it. Promise.

Specifically, the city of Berkeley is going to close Codornices for 2-3 months starting next week, in order to replant her loamy virgin soddage. Even worse, it's possible that neither Grove nor San Pablo will be available as backups at our traditional hour, which means that for the first time in a decade, we could find ourselves in a grueling aerobic Diaspora, wandering from land to land like those ancient Visigoths, Jutes and Khazars who've so inspired us to this very day.

The point is that I've started to look into various fields from North Oakland to El Cerrito, but if necessary, we may have to consider reasonable alternative times, such as 11AM Saturdays, 4PM Sundays and 3AM Tuesdays. In the end, of course, we're a stout, determined and flexible people by both birth and temperament, and therefore there will be one last pre-reseeding game at our beloved Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Raymond

Dear People,

There will (almost certainly) be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, and as of now, it is full. As always, please let me know ASAP if you committed and need to cancel, and if you still want in, feel free to get on the wait list or contact me later for word of reopened slots.

Since it will likley rain between now and then, you will need to check email that morning, but since this will be the last opportunaity to play before the field is closed down for the next 2-3 months, we will not be deterred unless it's actually raining that morning. As fo now, Yahoo Weather is predicting sunny skies for Sunday, but regardless, I may be calling on people to bring buckets, shovels and hoes. Yeah, hoes.

This week's field fee is just $4, and that includes
