Softball: The Virtues of Patience

Dear People,

Greetings, once again, from the dour confines of my sister’s dark, dank and seismically seasoned Seattle basement. As is my wont, I will not frighten you with the details of my current enslavement, nor the ostensible literary endeavor which keeps me so far away from all of you---innocent, anxious and craving for just a wee bit of recreational succor.

Truth be told, I was not even going to write, but so many have been asking for the details of "this week’s game" that I felt I could no longer stay silent in good conscience. Oh sure, I just rode out the 6.8 wrath of the insidious Juan de Fuca techtonic plate, and I still have two week’s worth of writing to get to New York by this weekend, and I have a canker sore the size of a mango festering on my lower left gum, but hey, don’t worry about me. The core issue is you, and your aerobic needs, and the care of your cardio-vascular integrity, and I think you know that I understand that.

Unfortunately though, the harsh reality is that not only were we totally hosed by Berkeley Parks and Rec last week, but the injustice will continue, for all city fields are reserved by others both weekend days throughout the month of March. More distressing still, I have not had the time to explore other options in the beloved neighboring metropoli of Albany and Oakland, and thus there will not be a game this weekend.

Lest you succumb to total despair, I should be back in time to arrange a game for the following weekend. Of course, real leadership does not scamper behind the feeble excuse of temporal scarcity, and thus if the people so choose, I am prepared to immediately resign and return to the nurturing soil of my suburban Tacoma smelting ranch….Ray
