Softball: A Rough Patch as Seen in the Context of its Meaning

Dear People,

In the end, my team crashed and burned, 37-36. Yes, in what may have been one of the finest 73-run games in the history of post-Jeffersonian unaffiliated email-organized American sport, Jonny’s side beat my own on the last hit of the match—a staggering 2-RBI triple by the beloved but usually feckless captain himself! I still get chills when I think of the 12 grueling hours of play, the ceaseless see-sawing lead, and most importantly, the transformative recalibration of everything we had always assumed about basic theoretical aerobiphysics.

I refer you, of course, to the eerie four-dimensional suck-hole-thingy that apparently swallowed 95% of their hits to left, and that’s despite Michael Davey’s Herculean efforts to deny it its power. Now let’s be clear; The Daveynator is one of our community’s truly great über fielders, and thus, if line drives, fly balls, pop ups and little piss-ant grounders all somehow skedaddle past his buttery little mitt (as indeed they did), then the only plausible explanation is that the tundra of deep shallow left is now clearly pervaded by an insidious space-bending sphere of massless sub-particulate Nazis.

Or maybe not. Maybe Mikie just had a crappy day. I honestly don’t know. What I do know is that life’s rich pageant is consistently filled with the random disconnect of studerific potential and cataclysmic execution, and in the end, my friends, no matter how painful that gap (especially for Mikie), it is what ultimately makes us modern, free and unabashedly human. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Ray

Softball: A La Prochaine

Dear People,

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, and as of now, there are still five slots left.

Unfortunately, I will not be there this week, since I will soon be traveling to a curious and mystical land, far, far away. In my stead, Chris Fure will be the official game organizer, and as such, he will retain the usual powers to detain, arrest and deport if necessary. Please treat him with unabashed reverence, and if you can’t do that, at least bring $3 for the field and show up on time.

Note: You can still commit (or, shamefully, cancel) by writing me here through late Friday afternoon, but as of tonight, please contact Chris directly at (510) 225-8585 or at cfure@midlandpro.com

God Speed….Raymond
