Softball: The Tempered Musings of an Internationalist Urbanite

Dear People,

Jeff W’s team crushed my own 23-14, and in all candor, my side was so consistently listless and ineffectual that I felt like one of those 17th century British naval officers watching their entire crew flounder in a scurvy-induced stupor of inexplicable aerobic despair. God, it must’ve been harsh back then.

Of course life can be bitter even today, and I’m not saying that just because hours before the game, a venomous wasp-thing the size of Fresno stung me on my right pinkie, causing it to swell up like some hideously turgid mauve-colored sausage. Even now, I must peck these words with great strain and discomfort, but for the record, I would never claim that this was why my fielding was dismal, my batting pathetic and my captainship nearly Jonnyesque.

On the other hand, I think the whole sorry incident does show once again that “nature” is outrageously overrated, and that putting aside your gorgeous and cuddly mammals (your superb felines, gentle bears and big ‘ol slobbery dogs with Far Side smiles), there is nothing particularly sublime, attractive or even acceptable about the vast majority of sentient life on this planet. Oh sure, perhaps Mr. Insect didn’t “mean” to hurt me, and for all I know, he was just showing his frustration at not being able to play outfield. And yet, enough is enough.

The point is that I happen to think that decent hard-working folks should be allowed to live and work where they want. Nevertheless, I also think we need to solve the true illegal alien problem, and if that means deporting the 12 trillion-gazillion lazy-ass spiders, bugs and rodentia that currently infest our built-for-people cities, then so be it. At a minimum, I think we can all probably agree on that, and therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 3PM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Ray
