Softball: The Enduring Glory of Holland

Dear People,

My team gingerly thrashed Anthony’s, 22-18, in one of those grueling and morally complex endeavors in which the brilliance of the dominant athlete was tragically all for naught (or not, or perhaps knot; I honestly don’t know). I refer you, of course, to Arthur, perhaps the most distinguished Dutch Grandpapa in the history of our community; Yes, he smashed searing line drives to every field, batted over 1,000, and perhaps most impressively, played first base with such staggering Hooveresque precision that he sucked in every line drive within 15 feet of the baseline. That he had just flown in from Amsterdam after a 7-month leave made his performance all the more sublime, and frankly, while I don’t want to be geoathletically glib, the fact is that I have always looked to the Arthurator as that consummate blend of Rembrandt, Spinoza and DiMaggio. Rare is the breed, my friends, rare is the breed indeed.

In any case, I wasn’t going to bother with a game this week owing to my organizational weariness (or wariness, or perhaps whereiness; I honestly don’t know), but then it suddenly occurred to me that this weekend marks the 416th anniversary of the birth of Charles de L’Ecluse, the world renowned Flemish Horticulturalist whose importation of Ottoman tulip bulbs triggered what would soon become the most moronic speculative bubble in financial history. At its peak in 1637, skilled Dutch craftsmen were paying up to 10 times their annual wages for a bogus overrated weed, which frankly, I still think is a lot dumber than paying a mere few hundred billion for an arguably delicious tranche of technically “worthless” derivatives.

But I digress. The point is that both Arthur and Tim are of hearty L’Eclusian stock, and so long as they tell me that they’re likely to play, I have no choice but to till the recreational soils upon which they can thrive. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning. . .Ray

Softball: 10:55 10:55 10:55. . .

Dear People,

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM SHARP, and as of now there are still four slots left. Please note that the field is officially reserved by others at 1PM, and thus you need to get there by 10:55 at the latest so that we can be assured of a full nine inning game. This shouldn’t be a problem since 10:55 is just like 11:14, except that it’s actually 19 minutes earlier.

Please bring $4 for the park fee, which for this week only includes my personal play-by-play tweetage via a local fiber-optic RSS feed, and if the authorities have a problem with that, then so be it…Raymond 845-7552
