Softball: Whatever it Takes

Dear People,

Frank's team crushed my own 13-8, but that's not important now. Nor does it matter that in the top of the 7th, Ramona slammed a line drive straight up the middle with such chilling ferocity that it shot right past three layers of defense---Enid at the pitcher's mound, Nanci at 2nd and Anthony snoozing in center right---before rolling deep into the aphid-laden shrubbage of the great beyond. Indeed, whatever glory that hit may have had was instantly transformed into its dialectical opposite as soon as Ramona stumbled kneecaps first onto the treacherous clays between 3rd and the plate, her virtually certain homer now nothing more than a ghastly good-for-nothing rally-destroying tag-out. And yes, my friends, more fragile is the ego than the patella ever could be.

But again, that's simply irrelevant now. For the hard reality is that I am being forced to write you directly from deep within the bosom of the UC Berkeley Law Library, where, if I so chose, I could peruse the various aerobic codes of, say, Oman or Finland. The point is that for the 4th day in a row, my Comcast connection is down, proving once again that quasi-monopolistic telecommunication companies are inherently softball-hostile.

Yet I'll be damned if I'm going to let those bastards prevent me from continuing to organize all of you, and if that means getting here to Boalt at the ungodly hour of 9AM, then that's the kind of stoic sacrifice I'm willing to make. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Ray

PS: Lest you were sleeping while reading this, my home internet is still down. So try not to panic if it takes longer than usual for me to confirm.

Softball: 10 Year Anniversary Video Hits Youtube!!!

Dear People,
There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 10:59AM, and as of now, it is full. As always, please let me know ASAP if you committed and need to cancel, and feel free to contact me later if you are looking for reopened slots. $3 for the field, which, as we all know, is a small price to pay for the salubrious benefits of pure aerobic release.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: For this week, the city accidentally rented out the field to a woman and some kids at 1PM (as opposed to the normal ‘arrangement’ of 1:30). Therefore, we should start at 11AM SHARP, which means that I expect to see all of your cherubic little faces by no later than 10:55. For those who are chronologically challenged, 10:55 is just like 11:08, except that it’s actually 13 minutes earlier.

FINALLY: For those of you who are regulars, or semi-regulars, or even one of the 150+ on this list who have never been to a game (or to the Bay Area, or even the United States), I am delighted to lead you to a cool little video that captures the spirit of this community.

Special thanks to webmaster, rennaisance artist and Danish mensch extraordinaire Kim Aronson, for bringing us world fame and glory! The link is to his Youtube page, but to start, look for Chris Fure’s captivating mug in the top left corner. Enjoy…
