Softball: An Incident of Aerobic Dementia

Dear People,

Jonny's team held off my own 18-15, in one of those frisky rapid-fire games in which my team had more errors than runs. And I don't mean errors of just physical ineptitude (noble as they are), but actual failures to apply the most basic tenets of math, tactics and spatial logic.

I refer you specifically to the top of the 4th, with the score tied, one out and runners on first and second. Leah made her community debut with a searing ground ball directly to short, where Chris Fure spastically bobbled it before finally gaining control. In any case, our calamity really began when Ehud inexplicably froze half-way on his dash to third, and then for reasons I don't pretend to understand, headed straight back to second.

Alas, Jonathon was darting toward that same tiny little base when I saw the ghastly specter of imminent over-booking. In all candor, I was both frantic and frightened, and thus I actually found myself screaming "get back!" Yes, "get back!," even though I knew that the ball just hit was a grounder and that Leah herself was now streaking from the plate to first. Unfortunately, the Jonanater obeyed his deeply conflicted ears, turned on a dime just five feet from second, and then pointlessly dashed back—thereby guaranteeing the most asinine double play in the history of our league.

Now look, I am fully aware that as the first-base coach, ultimate responsibility lies with me and me alone (as well as perhaps Ehud and Jonathon and others). Moreover, I’m obvioulsy not “happy” that a little bit of stress apparently reduces my cognitive abilities to those of an easily excited labrador retriever. Nevertheless, I believe that as a communal whole, we all learned that most valued of vital lessons—to wit, if a ball is hit on the ground and there are base runners behind you, sprinting backward to greet them is a really retardo idea. Yeah, that one we’ve now internalized, and therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Ray
