Softball: Bummer and Renewal

Dear People,

Dubious congratz to all on last week’s calamitous mini-melee on the normally peaceful grasses of the Codornices tundra. For the record, the field was in fact double booked, and while one may be tempted to seethe anew with the injustice of it all, the fact is that this is the first time that the City of Berkeley has blown it in over three years (compare that record with the insensate bureaucrats at UC, who frequently did the same, and generally treated us with contempt merely because of our unaffiliated email organized innocence).

Regardless, I think we learned a lot as a people that turbulent day, including why its probably more fun to play on a field that isn’t occupied by a score of semi-inebriated frat-boy types who use barrels of beer as bases. And I personally learned that while I am a pacifist and unabashed coward by both principle and temperament, I am not immune to the vicarious adrenal rush of watching a bunch of grown men revert to a good ‘ol fashioned rumble, especially when I’m a safe distance away, and more importantly, when it’s our boy who gets in the one and only decisive punch, in this case a startling blow to the clavicle of an unsuspecting rogue that echoed throughout the park as a clarion defense of all that is righteous in the pursuit of a simple piece of keg-free turf. Frankly, not since I was beat up by a fascist 3rd grade classmate have I felt so utterly absorbed in the raw ferment of the human condition, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

In any case, I have been assured by my beloved contact within the City Parks Department that this type of unfortunate snafu will not soon repeat, and that’s good enough for me. Therefore, and in order to immediately bring mirth and reassurance back to the community, there will be a game at Codornices this SUNDAY at 11AM, followed by a postmatch polysportal potluck barbecue, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning. If you’re going to stay for the barbie, you should feel free to bring friends, family and embittered ex-lovers, as well as your own meat. In addition, please let me know what you’d like to contribute; Much needed and appreciated would be items such as the grill itself, coal, ice, drinks, chips, condiments, fold-out table, pasta salad and of course, lightly braised Armenian breeding eels……Raymond
