Softball: The Varied Travails of Recreational Creation

Dear People,

Chris Fure's team utterly annihilated my own, 34-22, proving once again that the Furinator's old adage that “talent wins games and management loses them” is essentially correct-if, by 'talent,' one means the Machiavellian ability to convince me that the teams as I initially created them were balanced, even though every fiber of my justice-craving being said that equality required a serious pre-match trade. Of course, that's all sour grapes and even prophetically irrelevant, because the fact is that even in the bottom of the 6th, when my side gave up 16 runs on 7 hits and 32 errors, I still savored the role of leading a contingent whose very ineptitude would offer humanity ever greater insight into the tumultuous social dynamics of civilizational collapse.

The point is that I wasn't even going to organize a game this week because I figured that most of you would be glued to your televisions watching the World Cup, but then it suddenly occurred to me that we're talking about a soccer match, so I'm going to go out on a brazen American cultural limb and assume that as a softball-loving people, our aerobic tastes remain focused, participatory and anti-soporific. Yeah, that's what I said, and therefore there will be a game at Corodonices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning . . . Raymond

PS: That other game in Rio is due to start at noon, which means that you'd be able to see the last half while still addressing your most pressing cardiovascular needs. Moreover, Frank and I are currently working on a technical fix that will allow you to play ball while simultaneously watching the first half on a glorious hi-tech screen-if, by 'glorious,' one means the Machiavellian ability to convince yourself that a grainy 3x2 inch sheet of Samsung Gorilla Glass captures the basic phenomenological essence of distant athletic glory. In all candor, I believe it does.

PPS: The Germans, before they Destroyed Brazil . . .
