Softball: The Courage to Change

Dear People,

There will be a game this Saturday (7/19) at 4PM, at Kleeberger field, IF I get the requisite number of commits needed to assure a successful resumption of our athletic destinies. Please try to email your responses by no later than Thursday night, for all the reasons stated in previous correspondences.

A note on field choices: It turns out that Kleeberger is the ONLY
place available and reservable through Cal Rec, so the astroturf vs. herbafile debate is somewhat of a moot point (for those who think I'm pulling a fast one, the number of Cal Rec guest services is 642-8345) Contrary to what I had been told, Clark Kerr is only reservable by CK members, and briefly said, I don't have the time to deal with such a motley group of Bolsheviks, Moonies, and drugstore cowboys).

It is true that five people stated a preference for the purity of freshly hewn grazing sods, as opposed to only three who defended the ethical innocence of chemical flooring. All I can say is that any of you are welcome to spend an afternoon seeking out available grass, but in the meantime, I honestly feel Kleeberger is an excellent place to play. It is big and clean, and unlike most of the precariously cared for city grass fields, it's devoid of dog shit, rocks, puddles and the occasional rustling of loathsome garden vermin. Actually, the one well maintained grass field is at San Pablo, and it is my hope that we can soon have a night game under the soothingly organic influence of artificial lights.

Unless you plead bankruptcy, I'm going to ask for $1 per person for the first two games to recoup the cost of Cal Rec. But don't let that, or the sensual novelty of the astroturf experience, scare you from the commit that you know God himself implores you to make. Details Friday...Ray
