Softball: The Jane Question

Dear People,

Jim McGuire's team savagely beat back my own on a hot and sultry afternoon in which my peeps gagged on the bitter nectar of opportunity lost, 15-10. The fact is that both sides played honorably in the eyes of the Lord, but somehow we failed to seize the sitch with bases loaded and only one out in the top of the spine-tingling 9th. Many analysts, of course, will glibly blame me since the buck stops with captainship, but that's obviously not fair since I can't possibly control the feckitude of our pitiful final batters! Indeed, that's especially true given that I happened to have been one of them (with my unhelpful pop up to short), and regardless, I think we can all agree that failure herself is a prickly mistress who repels the tainted love of multiple provenance. Yeah, I think you see my point.

In any case, some of you may have heard that the city of Berkeley has officially changed the name of our beloved Codornices Park to Hammond Park, after the renowned Albany-Berkeley Girl's Softball League volunteer, Jane Hammond. See below:

http://www.berkeleyside.com/2015/06/29/berkeley-softball-field-named-in-honor-of-jane-hammond/

In fact, though, and as you can read, the park will retain the name Codornices (the Spanish word for quail, and not the Ohlone word for yak, as I had always thought), while only the actual field is now named anew. Still, I was tempted to get with the program and start announcing that our games would be “at Hammond,” but the first time I typed those words a week ago, I nearly broke down and sobbed as my heart cleaved in three. Then I decided that I would adopt a compromise and announce that our games would be “at Hammonices,” but upon further reflection, I decided that such an appellation sounded more like a dermatological problem than an actual locale.

So finally, after looking deep into my bosom (with all its sinewy musculature), I've decided that there is no shame in clinging to the pronominal traditions that have made our community so cheery and normal. And therefore there will be a game at our cherished yak-laden Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Raymond
