Softball: Mysteries of the Athletic Mind

Dear People,

Chris Fure’s team beat my own on Anthony’s annoyingly brilliant game-ending sacrifice, 15-14. Still, I can report that both sides played with an honorable je-ne-sais-quoi, though as a scholar of recreational psychology, I was most interested in the curious retreats from the logical decision-making processes which define the rational athlete. I specifically refer you to the bottom of the 5th, with the score tied, two out and our hero Anthony as the only base-runner on 2nd; A gentle breeze carried the haunting fragrance of lilac and myrrh while a sparrow chirped in the distance, when suddenly, Jonathon blasted a searing line drive straight to Leslie at 3rd!

True to consistent form, the Leslinator trapped the ball perfectly and was just about to make the easy out at 1st when an apparent wave of synaptic collapse engulfed her cerebellum athleticus. Time itself froze as she stood there motionless for several puzzling seconds, perhaps contemplating the raw geometric beauty of the leather orb she now caressed in her glove. Whatever. In the meantime, Jonathon safely scampered to first. Of course all great players suffer the occasional brain-melt, but what made this incident so compelling was that just as the play appeared to be ending, Tony took off for 3rd like a crazed gazelle in estrus, inexplicably darting straight for Leslie, who was still holding tight to that poisonous ball!

In retrospect, I believe what we witnessed was a classic outbreak of SEARS (Sudden Ephemeral Aerobic Retardo Syndrome), and more importantly, stark, compelling evidence of its highly contagious nature. Yes, the implications are frightening and even unclean, but I have no other way of explaining why Leslie’s befuddlement would lead the Capeman to commit such a ghastly act of runnercide. Still, I do know that whether the mode of transmission is eventually determined to be perniciously airborne-viral or suggestively bozo-psychological, we as a softball-playing peoples will never abandon our beloved fellow-athletes as they occasionally succumb to this utterly unsightly scourge. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Ray

Softball: W

Dear People,

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, and as of now, there are still four slots left.

Please bring $3 for the field, which is a small price to pay in the grand scheme of the aerobic hole…Raymond 845-7552

PS: As a longtime supporter of mammalian sterility (especially my own), I, like Deb, believe that come Saturday at 4PM, this is the place to be…
