Softball: End Times (Reflections on Religion, Sport and Destiny)

Dear People,

My team held off Ellen’s, 19-13, in an unusually honorable battle between two roster’s of exceedingly mediocre caliber. This is not to say that those who showed up were not some of the finest human beings I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing, but simply to state that for some reason, our dozen best players were all frolicking elsewhere, perhaps because they had heard that this week’s teams were going to suck, and suck hard. Well, call me an utterly crass observer of logical contradiction, but I happen to take great satisfaction in the rich understated irony of self-fulfilling prophecies.

Of course there are limits, which I only mention because I happened to be channel surfing last night when I stumbled upon Pat Robertson’s 700 Club. Just coincidentally, the head Godster himself was pontificating about the “exciting” interplay of American power, the Middle East and the Book of Revelations. I guess the point is that self-fulfilling, prophetic or not, I have to draw the line at Rapture-obsessed Evangelical loons influencing American foreign policy, since in fairness, apocalyptic conflagrations are totally annoying and simply not good for softball. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Raymond
