Softball: A Modest Dash of Zinn

Dear People,

Let the record show that Anthony led his team with a rare clarity of broad aerobic purposes, but alas, winning wasn't one of them. Now admittedly, that's a wise-ass thing to say, and yet I have to call it as I see it. The hard reality is that his side was stronger on paper and played with more panache, and in simple comparative context, they tended to make us feel verecund, tremulous and unclean.

For example, Alan Shabel's homers were more staggering than Kira's admittedly sneakier four-bagger right through Neil's tactically misplaced legs, and in the end, their overall hitting was simply more authoritative than ours. Moreover, Pace was the kinesiological backbone of my entire team, and yet he and his buttery little glove had more errors than the typical midterm in bonehead English. Nevertheless, the Antman apparently lost control of the shifting late-inning zeitgeist, and in the end, his entire contingent steadily melted into a metaphorically feckless saucer of classic Gruyère fondue, 22-16. Pity.

The point is that I wasn't even going to organize a game this week given that so many people were leaving town for the upcoming holiday weekend. But then I started thinking about how both Labor Day and softball emerged in the ferment of America's late 19th century industrial strife (give or take four decades), and how well over a century later, we in the lumpen aerobitariat continue to enjoy the fruits of this wondrously salubrious release. So sure, you're welcome to diss Eugene Debs and Joe Hill and drive off to your chichi cottage in Fresno, but I for one have a worker-lovin' league to run. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Raymond

Softball: Esoteric

Dear People,

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, and as of now, there are still three slots left.

Please bring $4 for the field, which for this week only includes a rare post-match walking tour of the catacombs of Emeryville…Raymond

PS: Prophetic. . .
