Softball: Vigilance and Idiocy

Dear People,

Congratz to all on last week’s 16-8 return to a healthy aerobic routine. The grey overcast sky brought an eerie premature darkness to the final innings, but the game was still fun, and in the end, perhaps the best therapy is just connecting with people.

______________

Having said all that, I must now return to the type of analytical drivel for which I am trained. Of course I will continue to methodically monitor events, though after extensive research,
I do believe that the most likely perpetrator is indeed Osama Bin Läderhosen. Still, I retain an open mind, and thus I will join with the Reverend Jerry Falwell in thoroughly investigating whether ultimate responsibility actually lies with a wily cabal of non-God-fearing homosexuals, abortion-rights activists and the ACLU.

In the meantime, there will be a game at Codornices this SUNDAY MORNING at 11AM, IF I get enough players by this Friday morning….Raymond

PS: I had actually written a brief summary of the game of September 9th on the Monday night before the events of September 11th, but I later chose to not send it out for obvious reasons. Now, however, over a full week has passed, and while I suppose I could continue with the Orwellian shame of history erased, to do so would let the terrorists win, and I simply can’t allow that to happen. And therefore….

Softball: Ouch (A Tale of Tender Convergence)

Dear People,

Congratz to all on last week’s resplendent 19-12 paragon of heart-wrenching drama in the recreational context. I still get veklempt when I think back on that terrifying moment in which a gentle fly ball became the simultaneous laser-like focus of two very different but totally honorable and dedicated fielders---each determined to make a glorious catch, and each oblivious to the intentions, zeal, and "presence" of the other.

In retrospect, there was probably no particular advantage in the sudden encounter of Andy’s pointy-little incisors with Lisa’s upper lip, yet the bloody post-collision aftermath left me totally in awe of the raw courage that these two beloved protagonists apply to their aerobic craft. Oh sure, technically, they collided while casually tossing balls "between innings," and when in viewed in that light, the ghastly wounds that resulted were clearly the stupidest injuries in the four year history of our otherwise dignified community. But that’s totally beside the point, and I think we all understand that.

No, my friends, heroism cannot be measured by the relevance of the sacrifice in question, and thus for me, Andy’s battered jaw and Lisa’s sanguineous visage reflect nothing less than the moral Dunkirk of our jaded times. Indeed, their actions may not have contributed to any immediate or tangible victory, but their scars will forever remain clarion symbols of hope, redemption and really pathetic peripheral vision. And therefore, there will be a game at Codornices this XXX*, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Ray

*Time and date X’d out from this posting, lest needless confusion strike those players who always skip straight to the bottom. Yes, I know my readers….

Softball: Decisions

Dear People,

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, but alas, there are no longer any slots left. As always, you’re welcome to call to see if there are any cancels.

This week’s field fee is just $1, and that includes your choice of a provocative post-game lecture on the role of the English subjunctive verb in times of crisis OR a delightful Peach and Frangipane Tart with Mulberry Sorbet…..Ray 845-7552
