Softball: Another Giant Leaving

Dear People,

Let the record show that my team was nursing a comfy 13-8 lead going into the bottom of the 5th, when suddenly something mysterious, untoward and even ghastly befell us, and in all candor, I’m still not really sure how to describe it. All I know is that half an inning, two hours, four errors, 300 hits and 17 runs later, Chris Fure’s contingent had taken a brutalizing dozen-run lead, and while we continued to fight with a certain floundering poise, we ultimately succumbed from this record-breaking disgrace, 33-22.

In looking back, I now believe that this curious outlier was not triggered by Chris, Frank, Joe, Matt, Alan, David, Dave, Jason, Kerri and Tom all slamming out countless line drives to everywhere we weren’t, impressive as that was (Nor, for that matter, was it the natural consequence of sheer post-Kantian resolve). No, my friends, I am now convinced that this monstrous Black Swan of an inning was the result of nothing less than some subtle form of multi-pronged foul play, almost certainly involving an insidious blend of illegal bats, crystal meth and crude aerobic Jihad. Yeah, I’ll say it again; I want my country back.

The point is that this upcoming week will likely be Peter’s last game before he and Tina move to Philadelphia, and truthfully, I am still a bit stunned by the news. As most of you know, Peter is the towering ethical gazelle of our entire league, having joined us all the way back in that first summer of ’97. Beyond his breathtaking speed (or slight lack there of), he has always been one of the truly great mensches of unaffiliated email-organized sport, and so naturally I quickly set out to sabotage his plans.

Indeed, I bluntly told him that if he really does move to Philly—a charming but softball-hostile metropolis with nothing of historic significance to recommend it—our own little community could quickly crumble into calamitous organizational oblivion, and in laying blame, I sternly reminded him, history will do what history does. Sure, the truth is stark and it often hurts, but that’s why it’s called “the truth,” and therefore there will be a game at Grove this Sunday at 11, FOLLOWED BY some bittersweet going-away pizza and beer at Lanesplitters Pub (at University and San Pablo), IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning. . .Raymond

Softball: Leaving on a Jet Plane ;-(

Dear People,

There will be a game at Grove this Sunday at 11, and as of now, it is full. As always, if you committed and need to cancel, please let me know ASAP, and if you’re hoping to grab a reopened slot, feel free to contact me later.

Regardless, all are invited to Lanesplitters (on San Pablo, about half a block South of University), for pizza and beer after the game, likely starting between 1:30 and 2:00. We will be celebrating Peter’s incalculable contributions to the development of unaffiliated e-mail organized sport, before he takes off for Philadelphia---The nation’s most shamefully intolerant city when it comes to unaffiliated email-organized sport. Ironic, huh?

$4 for the field/See ya Sunday….Ray
