Softball: The Unforeseen Risks of "Competitive Adjustment"

Dear People,

Congratz to all on last week’s stark 28-14 reminder that aerobic momentum is a fickle mistress indeed, a callous and abstract slut-thing of the recreational experience. Of course I make no excuses for my own team’s curious failure to hold on to it’s 13-1 lead, and yet, I must confess a certain sense of profound inner peace in captaining a crew that was outscored 27-1 over the last five and a half innings.

In any case, I can say without hesitation that this stunning reversal of fortune had nothing to do with the fact that Jeremy and Zac were brazenly exchanged mid-game for the greater competitive whole (Admittedly, as if they were nothing more than mere athletic tarts). For one thing, just because the teams on which Jeremy played collectively beat their opponents 40-2 means little per se, but more importantly, implicating the trade would statistically suggest that Zac was somehow "less good" than Jeremy, and that is obviously not my intention. Oh sure, his presence on the two teams he played with may have coincided with a total net deficit of 38 runs, but who amongst us has not had similar days? I think you see my point.

Before announcing next week’s schedule, I would like to briefly comment on the situation in Florida. Yes, I realize that this is a softball list and that there is no room for strident partisanship. I understand and respect that principle, and yet it’s also clear that we are all part of a grand experiment in athletic DEMOCRACY; That’s right, democracy, from the Greek roots "demo," meaning "people," and "cracy," meaning "stick wielding." As such, I must go on record as the organizer of this community and tell you that I believe with every fiber of my political being that if they were to fairly count those Dade county ballots, Ralph Nader would in fact become our next President-elect. And therefore, there will be a game this Sunday at San Pablo Field, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Raymond
