Softball: A Southpaw’s Tale

Dear People,

My team smote Jeff’s 20-17, in one of those grueling see-saw matches that reveal the sheer stout resolve of the emotively wounded athlete. If you must know, I refer to myself; Already fluish and tipsy from meds, I discovered just seconds before the game that I had lost my cherished rhino-leather fielder’s mitt, and thus I would have to depend on the kindness of aerobic colleagues. Yet when I shouted out to ask if there was anyone present who was also left-handed, I felt the icy silence and contemptuous stares of every eyeball in that park. It was then and there that I realized just how alone I was, and that just because I happened to favor a non-traditional limb, I would always be viewed as a freako athletic jihadist who could never be trusted. It’s harsh being me.

In any case, Siram took pity on a fellow first-baseman and allowed me to use his own glove throughout the game. Of course it was not made for a sensitive lefty like me, and as I gingerly sheathed it onto my right hand for the very first inning, I can’t tell you how utterly frightened, awkward and unclean I felt. And yet… The first throw to first was a hard but honest 3rd-inning lob from Jonny at short, and while I initially felt like fleeing, I took a deep breath, focused hard and caught it straight up!

Sure, it was my first time, so it hurt a little and I wish it hadn’t been so quick. In all candor, I wish Jonny had been a little more tender. But it was also a profoundly rich and sensual experience, and one that I was able to duplicate several more times that game. Indeed, I truly believe that my unexpected competence was not only a key to our triumph, but that in addition, the loss of my right-handed cherry was as transformative an experience as the end of my carnal innocence, six years ago this week. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Raymond
