Softball: Noel

Dear People,

Chris Fure's team beat back my own, 17-15, in one of those utterly heartbreaking defeats where, in painfully self-evident retrospect, we simply succumbed to a multi-inning smattering of unsightly little fuck-ups. I refer you to the top of the 4th, when, as my side's 3rd-base coach, I gave the inexplicable full-throttle go-ahead for Jeff W to dart straight from 2nd to home. Well, with a joyous smile and a passing wink to me, dart he did-and frankly, as if he were a proud pronghorn antelope testing his gams. Yet for reasons I don't pretend to understand, Saadia's throw from the field reached the plate a scant eight feet before the Jeffster, thereby not only destroying our first incipient rally, but perhaps calling into question the visual vigor with which my judgments on geometric analysis are so curiously rendered.

In any case, after falling behind by eight, we managed to claw our way back to a 14-14 tie, and yet as I contemplated our next tactical breakout in the top of the 8th, I began to feel queasy after noticing that Frank (my superstar shortstop) and Greg (Chris' vastly superior superstar shortstop), were in the upper bleachers, enjoying both the camaraderie of a fellow-enemy and a good ol' salubrious ciggie. Alas, in the bottom of the inning, Greg's nicotine buzz resulted in a skyrocketing one-out two-on 300 foot double to the sloped tundra beyond direct left, whereas Frankie's cancer-stick high appeared to trigger nothing more than your basic abulia-laden torpor. This explains the painful series of botched throws, missed outs and eventual game-winning runs for their side, but in fairness, the performance-enhanced Frankster still looked content and mellow.

The point is that this very day marks the 2,017th anniversary of the birth of the great Jesus Christ (give or take a decade), but since we already discussed him and his nativity-stirring posse last week, I want to keep the focus on our own community heroes like Jeff and Greg and Frank-all of whom could be celebrating their own 55th, 43th and 38th birthdays this very day as well (give or take a decade). Oh sure, they don't have lots of “followers” or, arguably, even a cohesive theological basis for their surprisingly ubiquitous fame. Yet I think we all know that collectively speaking, they play some of the most God-like softball in the history of this league, and therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning . . .
