Softball: Your Official New Year's Day Sport (Musings on Time and the Church)

Dear People,

In one of those wondrous Christmas Day displays of simmering organizational chaos just below the sublime aerobic surface, my team beat back Alan Miller's, 14-12. Nearly half the players had not graced our league in at least several months, four had never played with us at all, and one, Francesca from Rome, had never so much as touched a softball in her entire Italian life! And yet it was she in the top of the 9th who blasted Alan's deeply feared spit-glazed changeup into the gap between 2nd and right, and in so doing, batted in the final and game-winning runs!

So let's briefly recap: On Christmas Day itself, a seasoned pitcher of vital Hebraic stock is vanquished by a yidele-humbling blast from a transformative rookie batter who hails from the very soil where the bride of Christ has resided for almost 2,000 years! Sure, as divine interventions go, it was a gentle and even playful one, but I still get contemplative chills when witnessing the obvious yet inscrutable ways of a trouble-making creator.

The point is that this upcoming weekend marks the 429th January 1st since Pope Gregory XIII issued his calendar-smashing 1582 papal bull on the chronological stupidity of the previous Julian sitch, and I'm not saying that just because I love to type out the words “papal bull” whenever I get an opportunity to do so. Indeed, this particular bull has always left me with bittersweet feelings, if for no other reason than I've so often had an inexplicable craving to celebrate the winter solstice within 72 hours of Easter. Of course the 13th Gregster was only doing what temporal decency required, and in that sense, he was as honorable a Roman as Francesca is today. Yeah, I like to toy with the elasticity of my narrative arcs, and therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning. . .Raymond
